Three releases made their way to the August 13th – 15th 2010 Weekend Box office and they were The Expendables, Eat Pray Love and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Securing the first place and as predicted so was Sylvester Stallone’s The Expendables with an opening day’s solid earnings of $35 million. Following the great success of both Rambo and Rocky Balbao the 64 year old action star hasn’t failed to prove what he is capable of even at this age playing the trio role of actor script writer and director.
The success factor of The Expendables definitely lies on the might of Sylvester Stallone and of course ton of other action stars in the flick including Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Eric Roberts, Mickey Rourke etc and one needs to give credit to the advertising effort provided which was strong and smartly featuring the headlining actors as well as Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis in cameo type appearances so as to push down the usually number one opening Julia Roberts starring movie Eat Pray Love.
Eat Pray Love in the second place is with opening earnings of $23.7 million which is considerably quite low in earnings comparative to the male dominating The Expendables. Another fact is Eat Pray Love was based on the popular memoir by Elizabeth Gilbert that illustrated her true story and even though it has been generating a great deal of interest among those familiar with the best seller book with the female target audience in particular and what is strange is that while 75% of Eat Pray Love movie goers were women close to 40% of The Expendables audience were women too.
The other new release Scott Pilgrim vs. the World starring Michael Cera was only able to fill in the fifth position earning an opening day’s gross of only $11 million but considering any Wright movie like Shaun of the Dead which opened with $3 million and Hot Fuzz which opened with $6M Scott Pilgrim vs. the World’s opening sales is way better.
The rest of the Top Ten remained pretty much the same with Last week’s number one movie The Other Guys adding another $18 million to its total and Inception adding another $11M to its grand total of close to $250 million now. However three movies are out from this week’s Top Ten including Charlie St. Cloud ($29 million) Toy Story 3 ($400+ million) and The Kids are All Right ($17 million).

Stallone made his mark as an actor, in the 1976 Academy Award winning movie, Rocky and followed with its five sequels, along with more acclaimed action movies like Rambo etc. Considering the amazing cast, The Expendables is expected to be in the talks soon after its release.
