Assessing the box office 5th July 2010 it is clearly evident that The Twilight Saga: Eclipse has dominated the box office with a day’s gross of $18,805,051 and a cumulative amount of $176,382,220 having started screening since 30th June 2010.
As anticipated regarding its box office potential The Twilight Saga: Eclipse has gone up to the extent of creating a few records. The movie which was requested to have showing during midnight considering the scarcity of tickets earned a $30 million during its midnight showings and finished off with $68.53 million during the full day. This was not only a record for a Wednesday but also a record for best single day in June.
However while the “per day” earnings during the past few days has been fluctuating, Twilight Saga: Eclipse has managed to remain in first place since its release. There is no question about a profit, but the amount would depend on the how much the studio spent on advertising and how much they get from ticket sales.
In second place (considering days’ earnings) is Toy Story 3 with a cumulative gross of $301,883,298 after 18 days of its release. The positive aspect of the movie is considered to be its family friendly nature. Toy Story 3 becomes the second Pixar film to reach that milestone of $ 300 million in a quick time of 17 days and hence is expected to overtake the biggest hit of the year with over $400 million, Alice in Wonderland.
Based in a popular TV show The Last Airbender movie although was quite expensive hasn’t had the capacity to deliver as expected. Its movie reviews have not been all that good when some called it the worst movie of the summer. In its fifth day of release The Last Airbender has had a cumulative gross of 69,315,329 which creates a massive gap between the second and third positions.
Grown Ups considering the fact that it hasn’t had any direct competition hasn’t performed well either rather worse than The Last Airbender having a cumulative gross of only $84,634,307 in 11 days’ of release.
Knight and Day disappointingly has a cumulative gross of $49,460,348 in thirteen days of release. It’s a strange thing that an even a brand name like Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz haven’t had an impact of the movie’s ratings.
The June 25-27 weekend Box Office Estimates have been calculated and published in the web. While certain movies that were expected to be at the top of the chart remain there, others have taken their shifts up and down the chart with the new arrivals coming in. Well, no surprises, the computer animated movie, Toy Story 3 has had a massive #1 earning a $59 million for a 10-day total of $226.6, surpassing the totals of Adam Sandler’s Grown Ups and Tom Cruise’s Knight and Day by quite a margin.
Toy Story 3 also had a massive number one debut earning a sum of $109 million over its opening weekend and considering all the movies that hit the $100 million mark, Toy Story 3 is placed at #3, preceded by Shrek 2 and Shrek 3.Toy Story 3 isn’t far behind Shrek Forever After, considering the movies’ cumulative grosses which turn out to be that it is trailing Shrek Forever After by less than only 3 million. And this isn’t much with regard to the movie industry.
In second place is the comedy flick, Grown Ups with an estimated $41 million. However, according to sources, this amounts to about 5 million more than what was predicted and many feel the result of this positive figure is Sandler’s brand name and not to forget the comic cast for the movie including Chris Rock, Kevin James, David Spade, and Rob Schneider. With Grown Ups and Knight and Day in their first week of release, the action thriller, Knight and Day was forced to take one step below Grown Ups, earning less than half of the weekend gross of Grown Ups, amounting to about $20.5 million.
This is disappointing to the Knight and Day fans, but many feel that this is due to the film having to compete with previously released similar genres like Killers and The Bounty Hunter, but you never know what it would be like next weekend, with constant fluctuations in the earnings. Finally, in the fourth and fifth places, screening for the past 3 weeks, are The Karate Kid and The A-Team with weekend gross earnings of $15.4 million totaling $135.6 million and $6 million totaling $62.8 million to date.
