David Fincher’s adaptation of the Swedish novel The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was recently announced to take a December 21, 2011 release date. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is the first entry in late author Stieg Larson’s crime thriller trilogy The Millennium series, where it follows a journalist (Daniel Craig) and a female hacker (Carey Mulligan) who try to solve the mysterious case of the disappearance of an heiress.
Furthermore the second and third films of Larson’s trilogy The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest is said to be filmed in the near future and I’m guessing would be based on the success of the first one.
However Director Niels Arden Oplev‘s Swedish adaptation of the same book starring Noomi Rapace has earned an impressive $101.6 million worldwide while the second The Girl Who Played with Fire has earned a $53.3 million so far. The third installment The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest is set for American release later this month.
So according to statistics it looks as though David Fincher will have to work on the second installment of the trilogy immediately after the first one’s release.
