MSNBC Films, a feature banner of the cable network, is deciding what to do with its documentary, “Witch Hunt.”
It seems like there’s a lot of crossover among cable/DVD/theatrical releases these days. Films that could easily be theatrical releases, such as HBO’s “John Adams,” are playing on TV. And some films are released simultaneously in theaters and DVDs. And then there are those films that are so bad they should never be released anywhere, but that’s another post.
Sean Penn executive produced “Witch Hunt,” which centers on a Bakersfield, Calif., district attorney who allegedly overstepped his powers in pursuing child-molestation cases in the 1980s. Journalists Dana Nachman and Don Hardy (“Doing Time”) helmed the doc, which plays this weekend at AFI.
MSNBC Films will air the doc on the network in the spring and is exploring options for theatrical release. I don’t know, though… Would you see a movie in theaters that you’ve already seen on TV, or vice versa?
